Bangkok Underground Film Festival is back with our second event in 2017 in collaboration with Noise Market 6 @ Museum Siam. At 8pm on Sunday (June 4, 2017) we’ll be screening the highly acclaimed 'My Buddha is Punk' by Andreas Hartmann after the overwhelming success of our Asian premiere screening earlier this year at BUFF 2017.

Free open air screening. No reserved seating. Film will have Thai and English subtitles.

Kyaw Kyaw, a 25-year-old Burmese punk, pursues the dream of seeing the punk scene take off in Myanmar. The former military dictatorship carried out a few democratic reforms, but he remains sceptical: In his opinion, the country hasn’t changed yet. Along with the members of his punk band, he tries to raise the awareness of his people about the persistent violation of human rights. By way of his music and the demonstrations in the streets, he criticizes the ongoing civil war and the persecutions of ethnic minorities. He travels across the country to promote his own philosophy among the young generations: A symbiosis of Buddhism and punk that rejects religious dictates and political doctrine.

ANDREAS HARTMANN
Andreas Hartmann (born in 1983) is a Berlin-based filmmaker and cinematographer. He studied cinematography at the Film University Babelsberg Konrad Wolf. His first feature-length documentary “Days of Rain” (2010), shot in Vietnam, premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival Cine?ma du Re?el in the Centre Pompidou Paris. His work (DoP), the fiction feature film “Little Thirteen” (2012), was screened at many international film festivals (e.g., Munich, Warsaw, Sa?o Paulo) and in 2013 at the Berlinale Film Festival, in the preselection of the nominations for the German Film Awards. Between 2012 and 2013 Andreas Hartmann went as a multiple DAAD scholarship holder to Myanmar to produce his second feature-length documentary “My Buddha is Punk” (2015), which premiered at the 56th International Documentary Film Festival dei Popoli in Florence. In 2014 he was Artist-in-residence in the Villa Kamogawa (Goethe-Institut) in Kyoto, Japan. In 2017 he was nominated for the prestigious German TV award “Grimme-Preis”.
